The University of California, San Diego, also referred to as simply UCSD or UC San Diego, is a public research university located in La Jolla, which is a wealthyand hilly seaside resort community in the northern side of San Diego, in the US state of California, with a population estimated at a number of more than 42 000 inhabitants, during the 2004 census.
UC San Diego was established in 1959, and it is one of the 10 general campuses of the University of California system. It is academically organized into 6 graduate and 6 undergraduate divisions, through which it offers its students, who currently number more than 23 000 undergraduate and approximately 5000 graduate students, 25 undergraduate majors, 52 masters degrees, 51 doctoral programs, and four professional degrees, in various fields of study.
UCSD's athletic teams are known as the Tritons, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, in a wide range of sports, including in volleyball, soccer, basketball, track and field, fencing, golf, softball and tennis, although for water polo, fencing, and men's volleyball, they compete at the Division I level. They do not have an NCAA football team.
Their distinctive colors are navy blue and gold, and their mascot is King Triton.
